AugustHeart, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a model of the screening program developed by Championship Hearts Foundation in Austin, Texas. AugustHeart is a community effort involving local health care systems, a team of pediatric cardiologists, nurses, cardiac sonographers, echocardiogram technicians, area high school athletic programs, parents, sponsors and an army of volunteers. AugustHeart hosts free heart screening events in an effort to screen every Bexar County student athlete for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and other heart disorders. The ultimate goal is to screen all incoming Bexar County freshmen on an annual basis.
